Alevi Religious Education

Since August 2002, the Alevi Community of Berlin (BAT) – Cemevi, the Alevi house of worship, has been providing Alevi religious education in Berlin primary schools. Since the 2014–2015 school year, it has also been offered at secondary level. Lessons take place for two hours a week and are taught by Alevi teachers. All pupils at the school are welcome to attend. In the current school year, around 225 pupils are taking part. As with other religious education lessons in Berlin, Alevi religious education does not affect whether a pupil moves up to the next year. As the Berlin Cemevi, we also issue a separate school report to pupils who attend Alevi religious education.
Lessons follow the curriculum drawn up by the Alevitische Gemeinde Deutschland e.V. (Alevi Community of Germany). They cover many topics, including the unity of Hak, Muhammad and Ali in the Alevi faith, the history of Alevism, the place of the bağlama and the Semah in the Alevi faith, the Alevi understanding of ethics, Dede/Ana/Pir, Hızır, the great figures of Alevism, the Muharrem and Hızır fasts, the Cem ceremony, the twelve services and Musahiplik (spiritual companionship). In particular, we teach the principles of Can, Rızalık and Lokma.
Each lesson begins by seeking mutual consent (rızalık). In this way, any hurt feelings between the children can be addressed and they can make peace with one another.
